NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — There’s a new singing competition based on the hit ABC TV show, “American Idol.” Legendary New Orleans musicians will decide who’s the best singer in The Big Easy for “NOLA IDOL.”

Musicians Cyril Neville, Irvin Mayfield and David Batiste have teamed up with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission to find the “NOLA IDOL.”

Neville, Mayfield and Batiste will be the judges and coaches of “NOLA IDOL,” which will be a city-wide singing competition held at various NORDC locations.

Grammy Award winner Mayfield is currently NORDC’s Artist in Residence.

There will be three rounds of competition before the grand finale showdown.

Music Executive Nolan Baynes said when it comes to music, New Orleans knows what it takes.

“New Orleans would be like a gold digger landing on a gold mine, the musical talent supply, there’s an endless supply of cultural currency and talented people,” Baynes said.

The first round of competition will be held on May 22. They are asking singers to register on the NORDC website.

In addition to “NOLA IDOL,” they will be creating a city-wide choir to perform at various events.

The winner of “NOLA IDOL” will get cash prizes, professional coaching, performance at festival opportunities and much more.
