Nicole Kidman is opening up about why she and Reese Witherspoon feel now is the time for Big Little Lies season three.

In an interview with Elle, the multi-award-winning actress confirmed that she and her co-star and fellow executive producer have been discussing where they want their stories to go in a possible third season. She also explained why time away from the show was important.

“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman told the publication.

Sources familiar with the series told The Hollywood Reporter in January that Witherspoon and Kidman have an idea they are both excited about for season three and were working to put together a formal pitch for HBO. While no deals are in place yet, the same sources explained at the time that everyone was eager about the possibility of reviving the Emmy-winning series.

One of the biggest uphill battles for another Big Little Lies installment, however, is the fact that its cast is high in demand, with Witherspoon still starring in The Morning Show and Kidman having several projects in the works, including a second season of Nine Perfect Strangers. However, the Expats star noted that the real-life friendships the actresses have built make finding time to film a little easier.

“I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness, and you want to spend time together.”

The Undoing actress also shared that her daughter is partially responsible for her and the Legally Blonde star considering another go at the series.

“My daughter is the one who watched both of the [seasons] and went, ‘OK, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,'” Kidman explained. “She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise.'”

Big Little Lies also stars Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Adam Scott and Kathryn Newton, among others. Meryl Streep joined the cast in season two, portraying the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s Perry Wright.

Elsewhere in the profile, the Being the Ricardos star shared that she enjoyed becoming a meme following her AMC Theatres commercial that went viral amid the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2021. People loved it so much, the pinstriped suit she wore in it was auctioned off by Sotheby’s for $9,525.

To this day, one of her favorite parts of the ad campaign has been seeing all the ways people have spoofed it, especially drag queens. “My dream will be to be onstage doing it with a drag queen,” she said. “I’ve got to be able to do that at some point.”
