Netflix’s ‘Good Times’ Trailer Shows Everything But A Good Time

Netflix’s Good Times animated series showed off its “irreverent” style in a new trailer.

The trailer was released on Wednesday (March 27), showing the series’ all-star cast in action. Voice acting from J.B. Smoove, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jay Pharoah, Marsai Martin, Gerald “Slink” Johnson, and Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola can all be heard in the 2-minute clip.

The teaser illustrates a hyper-chaotic version of Chicago’s housing projects, with the Evans family attempting to do their best to survive. Much like in the original Good Times, Reggie Evans (Smoove) and his wife, Beverly (Brown), attempt to show and give their kids a better life. Unfortunately, not much has changed, as the system continues to overpower the family’s will and hope—not much of a good time, actually. An official logline for the show details what fans can expect.

“It turns out the more things change, the more they stay the same, and keeping your head above water in a system with its knee on your neck is as challenging as ever,” the description reads. “The only thing tougher than life is love, but in this family, there’s more than enough to go around. In this irreverent reimagining of the TV classic, a new generation of the Evans family keeps their heads above water in a Chicago housing project.”

The logline also describes the show as an “unadulterated comedy,” and the show isn’t shy on emphasizing the “unadulterated” aspect of the cartoon. The trailer includes over-the-top depictions of poverty, including a shootout in the project towers, a baby selling drugs, a field of people suffering from substance disorders, a baby stroller with gold rims, and much more.

The series was developed by Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door, Steph Curry’s Unanimous Media, and Sony Pictures Television. Ranada Shepard will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Curry, Lear, MacFarlane, Erick Peyton, Jeron Smith, Brent Miller, and Erica Huggins are additional executive producers.

“It’s a thrill to be partnering with Norman Lear and to help bring new life to his groundbreaking show Good Times,” MacFarlane said back in 2020 when the show was first announced via TV Line. “Animation is the ideal medium with which to reimagine the original show.”

Netflix has also announced that all ten episodes of the animated series will be released on Friday, April 12.
