Despite only being on for a few weeks, season 19 of NCIS has blindsided fans several times already. First came Gibbs’ (Mark Harmon) sudden departure and Parker (Gary Cole) replacing him as the new team leader. Then came the big surprise this past Monday night.
This week, fans flipped to CBS to watch the hit drama in its usual 9 p.m. ET time slot. Unfortunately, within the first few minutes, many viewers began pointing out that they were watching a rerun of an NCIS season 18 episode titled “1mm,” which originally aired on January 26, 2021. In addition to Gibbs being front and center, the rerun also featured former special agents Sloane (Mario Bello) and Bishop (Emily Wickersham), who both left the show last season.
After fans realized that they had seen the episode before, tons of them took to social media in search of an explanation. Instead, folks stumbled upon memes of Chief Medical Examiner Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) that NCIS had posted on Instagram and Twitter (none had any mention of the episode rerun). Understandably, fans seemed very confused and disappointed, especially since they weren't given a heads-up from the show.
“Wait I’m so lost. Is there no new NCIS episodes today??” one person tweeted. “Rerun tonight? Ridiculous,” another added on Instagram. “Very annoyed a rerun on tonight. I wore my NCIS [t-shirt] for nothing,” a different fan said. “SAD THAT THERE IS NO [EPISODE] TONIGHT,” a follower commented.
That said, not everyone was upset that NCIS aired a rerun. “Thanks for the rerun! Yeah, well, maybe I am one of the few who enjoyed it 😅 but it was sooooooo good to see Gibbs, Jack, Ellie. The show is not the same without them and after everything that has happened this season, I definitely enjoyed this break!” someone wrote on Instagram. “Repeat tonight and was looking forward to a new episode. However, I do like this one and currently watching,” another tweeted.
There were also others who couldn’t get enough of Jimmy’s pictures and their captions, including “C’mon in, the grass is fine” and “Feeling cute, might determine the cause of death on a body later.” The last one posted made a reference to the painting scene from Titanic: “Draw me like one of your autopsy cadavers.”
“Palmer is iconic!” a fan tweeted. “I love these 😂 😂,” another added on Instagram. “*Gives Gibbs stare* ‘Palmer, what are you doing?’” a follower wrote imagining Gibbs’s reaction.
The good news is that NCIS is returning with a new episode called "False Start" on Monday, November 1 at 9 p.m. ET. A new promo shows Parker still trying to get the team to warm up to him — this time with pigs in a blanket. We'll soon see if that does the trick!
