How the morning news shows reacted to Matt Lauer’s firing
On Wednesday, NBC News fired Matt Lauer from Today amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, Lauer’s longtime colleagues, were visibly shaken as they relayed the news. As Lauer was a powerful news figure, other morning news shows were quick to react.
Gayle King of CBS This Morning shared her reaction, having just gone through the firing of anchor Charlie Rose. King said, “I have a sickening feeling of déjà vu, certainly, because we’re dealing with our own situation here. But it does send the message, and shows that you are not too big to fall.”
On Good Morning America, Robin Roberts noted that Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb shared their support for their female colleagues who came forward.
And on Megyn Kelly Today, Kelly — who worked at Fox News during the Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly scandals — said that although she’s saddened by the allegations against her colleague, there’s something more important to keep in mind. She said, “When this happens, what we don’t see is the pain on the faces of those who found the courage to come forward. And it is a terrifying thing to do.”
