Mom’s cleanup consequence divides TikTok: ‘He’s too young for that’
One mom shared a consequence for her son after he refused to clean his room, and it has TikTok divided.
Tabatha Marie (@tabathamarie) took to TikTok to chronicle what happens when her preschooler doesn’t clean his room.
In the video, Tabatha looks into the camera and says, “When you ask your child for 2 days in a row to clean his room …” and then flips the camera to show the mess in her son’s room.
“And his response is, ‘No, you clean it, Mommy.’ OK, I will do that. Gladly.”
The situation soon becomes a lesson in “be careful what you wish for” as we see Tabatha gathering all the toys and putting them into trash bags.
Once she’s finished, her son’s room is totally clean and toy-free. Tabatha writes, “Momma is not raising no disrespectful men. It is not a ‘mommies’ job or ‘womens’ job to do anything. You make the mess, clean it up. You see momma struggling, help her: Don’t sit there and let a [woman] struggle periodt. My babies will learn this quickly.”
While this punishment seemed harsh to some viewers, Tabatha made sure to note in the comments that the toys “are all in the basement. We didn’t throw them away.”
Regardless of Tabatha’s disclaimer, the video — which has racked up 3.5 million views — caused quite a stir among viewers.
Is he too young?
Some commenters were critical of Tabatha’s parenting choice and thought her child was too young for a lesson like this.
“Judging by the toys, he’s too young for that entire responsibility. If you want it clean, start by helping him and then work up to him doing it alone,” wrote one TikTok user.
To those questioning whether Tabatha’s punishment was appropriate for her son’s age, she wrote, “I love how everyone here has an opinion. My child is almost 5 and has cleaned his own room for some time now and yes I offered to help and so did dad.”
Other TikTokers were less critical of the punishment.
“I don’t see anything wrong here. You do you mom. Only you know how to raise your child,” one user wrote.
While all families approach chores differently, a study from the University of Minnesota shows that children who start getting involved in household chores at 3 to 4 years old are more likely to be successful adults and develop a sense of responsibility, self-reliance and self-worth.
Either way, a bedroom isn’t going to clean itself!
