New Miss Day of Portugal R.I., Junior and Mini Juvenile to be crowned on Sunday

CUMBERLAND — Nine contestants will be vying for Miss Rhode Island Day of Portugal titles on Sunday, May 19.

The pageant is being organized by Suzette Vieira Marques, who competed as Mrs. East Providence in 2013 and placed as a finalist in the Mrs. Rhode Island America pageant.

According to Marques, the Miss Rhode Island Day of Portugal pageant “enables all Luso-American young women to learn more about their ancestry, while instilling the importance of tradition, culture, and self-confidence.”

This year’s contestants will be competing in three categories: Miss Mini Juvenile Day of Portugal RI, Miss Junior Day of Portugal RI, and Miss Day of Portugal RI.

They will be judged on presentation, talent, and knowledge of Portuguese culture.

The pageant is being choreographed by Stephanie Benevides, who also directs the dance rehearsals for the Clube Juventude Lusitana Folklore Group.

Who are this year’s Miss Day of Portugal RI contestants?

Vying for Miss Day of Portugal are Mariah Ross, 24 (Miss Piri Piri Kitchen), Nikki Bordalo, 14 (Miss Jorge’s Auto) and Eva Franco (Miss Clube Juventude Lusitana).

Serena DaRosa, 14 (Miss Sportinguista de Rhode Island), Sabrina Bordalo, 13 (Miss Accurate Auto Center) will vie for the title of Miss Junior Dia de Portugal.

Julia Martins, 9 (Miss Clube Sport União Madeirense), Scarlett Gaspar, 6 (Miss União Portuguesa Beneficente), Chloe Gaspar, 8 (Miss União Portuguesa Beneficente), and Camila Heney, 7 (Miss Bev Voyage/Grass Guys Lanscaping) are each hoping to be crowned Miss Mini Juvenil Dia de Portugal.

Winners of each category will ride in the Day of Portugal RI parade to take place on June 9 in Downtown Providence and make appearances at events throughout the year.

Where will the Miss Day of Portugal RI pageant take place?

The Miss Day of Portugal RI Pageant will take place at 2 p.m. May 19 at Clube Juventude Lusitana, located at 10 Chase St., Cumberland.

Admission is $25. Tickets will be sold at the door and include admission to the show, raffle drawings, and finger foods.
