Miranda Cosgrove recalls her own “Baby Reindeer” experience with stalker who set himself on fire

The stalker lit himself on fire and shot himself in the front yard of her Los Angeles home.

Miranda Cosgrove recounted a horrifying experience with a stalker that just might rival the stalker story in Netflix's Baby Reindeer.

Eight years ago, a man who stalked the iCarly star, 30, lit himself on fire and fatally shot himself in the front yard of her Los Angeles home. He had previously shot at a woman who looked like Cosgrove as she drove by the property. She still lives in the same home.

“That’s another reason why I go back and forth to my parents’ house so much,” Cosgrove said in a new cover interview with Bustle. “I just don’t feel super safe in that house. For two years after it happened, I wouldn’t really stay there. Then I got into a relationship and because that person was there with me, I was less scared. But I don’t really like being there on my own that much.”

The actress has been on the hunt for a new home ever since, but has yet to find one. She also revealed that she actually ran into the woman her stalker shot at an event for Kitten Rescue LA years later. “This girl came up to me, and she was like, ‘I didn’t know if I should tell you this here or how to say this, but I’m actually the girl that was at your house that got shot at.'"

And yes, Cosgrove has seen Richard Gadd's much buzzed-about Baby Reindeer, a retelling of the Scottish comedian's own experience with a woman who becomes obsessed with him after meeting at the bar where he worked. During his encounters with his stalker, he's forced to confront the long-buried trauma of past sexual abuse he endured.

“I feel like if that were me, having to go back through your most terrible experiences and then try to act them [out], that’d be so hard," Cosgrove said of Gadd.

For now, Cosgrove can be seen in lighter fare, starring in Netflix's rom-com Mother of the Bride opposite Brooke Shields, Chad Michael Murray, and Benjamin Bratt. From director Mark Waters, the film stars Cosgrove as a young woman who discovers that her fiancé's father is the man who broke her mother's heart years ago.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Cosgrove spoke about how filming wedding scenes offered renewed perspective in the wake of a breakup. "Before I went to film the movie I actually went through a break up in real life, so it was funny getting married 50 times for two days in a row," Cosgrove said. "But it kind of made me weirdly excited and happy for the future and what's to come."
