These Are Mina Starsiak Hawk's 10 Best Renovation Tips

HGTV’s Mina Starsiak Hawk is everywhere these days, from the newly released Season 7 of Good Bones to the much-anticipated spinoff show, Good Bones: Risky Business, which is set to release later this summer. The spinoff will follow Hawk for six episodes as she renovates, in her words, “one giant property" dubbed “Charlotte Hall,” after her daughter.

With each new episode of Good Bones—not to mention daily on Hawk's Instagram page, @twochicksandahammer—fans of the show discover fresh design inspiration and tips from Hawk and her team. As fans of the show ourselves, we decided to round up the best advice from 7 seasons of strategic renovations (including asking Hawk herself for some faves!). Here are her top 10 tips.

1.Simple curb appeal works wonders

“Summer is the best time of the year to add curb appeal to your home,” Hawk tells House Beautiful. “An easy project would be to add flower boxes beneath your windows. They are simple to DIY and won’t break the bank.”

2. New railings = new look

If you’re tired of wooden spindles on your porch or inside your home, trade them out for a fresh new look. “Unique and contemporary railings for stairs and porches are on-trend, and we love using them as a fun, subtle addition to the interior design,” Hawk divulged in a recent Instagram post.

3. You should always save your trim

If you’re renovating an older home, don’t scrap everything! “Millwork, including molding and trim, is a detail that brings a traditional feeling and can be modernized with a paint color coordinated to the space,” Hawk explains.

4. A front door refresh can work wonders

Any fan of Good Bones knows that Mina loves a pop of color. Changing your door color to a vibrant cobalt blue or a pale yellow might be just the thing your entry needs to create a great first impression.

5. Touches of bling add instant luxe

From sparkly chandeliers to touches of gold, Mina loves to bring some extra bling to the homes she decorates. An easy way to add some sparkle is trading your boring cabinet pulls for some pretty gold handles.

6. The right curtains make a room

“It’s a very outdated look to hang your curtain right at the window,” said Hayden Worth, interior designer for Two Chicks and a Hammer, in a recent Instagram post. “So play with height and hang your curtains two to three inches outside the window so that your curtains fall on either side of the window.”

7. An all-white kitchen needs warmth

If new countertops are in your future, one of Hawk's favorite ways to warm up a white kitchen (a design style she is ALL for, by the way!) is by adding butcher block countertops. Can’t swing new tops? Purchasing a small butcher block island will create a similar effect.

8. When in doubt, look to nature for inspiration

Hawk and her mom and co-host, Karen E. Laine, are famous for their boho inspired designs. During Season 6, episode 1, the two created a “nature chic” design theme by pairing loads of plants with organic wood tones and high-end finishes like metallics and touches of gold. The result was stunning and so easy to recreate!

9. Bring the vacation in

No funds for a beach house? No worries! Create a light and airy coastal farmhouse vibe in your bedroom by painting your room with a touch of sea blue. “Add in strips and wood accents, and you brought Coastal to Modern Farmhouse for a perfectly peaceful bedroom retreat,” Mina explained in a @twochicksandahammer post.

10. Mix your metals

One of Hawk's favorite design elements is mixed metals. To add visual interest and a touch of drama, don’t be afraid to combine matte black fixtures in a bathroom with gold framed mirrors and cabinet pulls.
