TARRYTOWN - If they were feeling miserable before, they're feeling much less miserable now.

St. Joseph Regional High School's production of "Les Miserables" on Tuesday garnered 13 nominations for the 2024 Metro Awards, including for outstanding overall production, the top honor for the high school equivalent of the Tony Awards across Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Bergen counties.

What a night: 26 things seen and heard at Pedro's Open Mic

The Metro Awards, produced by Nyack's Helen Hayes Youth Theater, will be presented at a ceremony at Purchase PAC on June 10. Hosting will be Broadway actors JJ Niemann ("Back to the Future") and Amber Ardolino ("A Beautiful Noise").

An all-boys Catholic high school in Montvale, New Jersey, St. Joseph draws students from Bergen and nearby Rockland County.

Its production of the Victor Hugo musical — about Jean Valjean, a man jailed for years for stealing a loaf of bread — was nominated for overall production, leading male-identified role, supporting male-identified role and female-identified role, chorus, director, music-director, scenic design, lighting design, hair and makeup design, lobby display, vocal performance by a female-identifying performer, and child performer.

Who's nominated for outstanding overall production Metro Award?

Of the seven schools nominated for outstanding overall production, three are single-sex Catholic high schools that draw all-star talent from the surrounding area to fill out their casts. A fourth is a magnet school that brings talented students from all over Bergen County to its Hackensack campus. The remaining three are public schools, one in Bergen, one in Putnam and one in Westchester.

Nominations in 36 categories, for 63 schools

The nominations were announced in a live webcast from the site of last year's ceremony, Tarrytown Music Hall, by producers Blake Spence and Jordan Singer, joined by lohud.com reporter Peter D. Kramer. The Journal News/lohud.com is the exclusive media partner of the Metro Awards and will also livestream the June 10 ceremony, along with a pre-show blue-carpet interview program.

Metros Night is a chance for theater kids to dress up and scream their lungs out whenever their school is mentioned. They cheer and clap and sing showtunes while waiting for breathless winners to make their way to the stage, sometimes from the balcony. It's deafening and delirious.

Spence and Singer are in their second year helming the contest, which is the brainchild of Danielle Rudess, owner of Nyack's Helen Hayes Youth Theater. While the Metros returned last year after a three-year pandemic pause, this is the 25th anniversary of the first time the awards were handed out, when they were called the Helen Hayes Awards.

The Metros, the loudest, proudest night on the high school musical calendar across the Lower Hudson Valley, had 63 schools participating this year. That meant they paid the entrance fee and had judges attend their productions. They also produced video recordings for judges to watch for further evaluations.
