It’s the trend that just won’t quit.

Here’s something you probably don’t know about me: My two favorite sartorial things are all-white and stripes. The former looks so crisp and luxe—not to mention is perfect for summer—while the latter oozes French-girl chicness that makes me feel like I’m walking around the streets of Paris with a fresh baguette in hand. Hey, a girl can dream!

So, imagine my heart eyes when I saw Meryl Streep in all that and more—the more being the ‘It’ shoe trend of summer 2024 that simply rounded the look together. The actress is currently attending the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where fashion is never, ever lacking—as she proves so clearly.

For one of the event’s red carpets, Streep went an all-white look, including a crisp pantsuit with a bold shoulder, slightly oversized blazer, and sleek front-seam pants. Underneath the jacket, she wore a striped silk blouse from my go-to affordable silk brand, Lilysilk, an under-the-radar label that’s my best-kept secret for luxe silk—trust me, you’ll be obsessed. But the winning element of it all wasn’t that straw hat, nor those black sunnies or oversized hoops (though they’re great, too). Silver shoes—and frankly, metallic footwear in general—has been popping off like nothing else. I've spotted a lot of Mary Janes on the street style scene, which are also showing no signs of fading away anytime soon, but I’ve also seen in-your-face metallics everywhere, even at Cannes, proving that summer 2024 is going to be silver shoe summer (sorry, hot girl summer, you’ve met your match).

Streep slipped into a simple, no-fuss pointed-toe pump to complete her look—and it was the right move. The footwear shined against the all-white look, adding a touch of luxe to her coastal grandma-esque red-carpet look. Imagine the ensemble with black heels—it wouldn’t have had that same level of pizazz, being a hard contrast. Now, imagine the heels with neutral pumps; it would work, but might feel too “safe.” Silver footwear is the perfect in-between, as it pairs well with everything, basically making it a neutral in my eyes.

Streep isn’t the first celeb to wear silver shoes, and she won’t be the last; Anne Hathaway went with metallic cowboy boots, Katie Holmes opted for in-your-face pumps, and even Martha Stewart has tried her hand at the style. Now, Streep is giving it a go, proving not only its foothold in the fashion world, but also that silver shoes—or metallics in general—are truly ageless.
