Meow Wolf announces its Los Angeles venue

Meow Wolf has announced more details regarding its Los Angeles-based exhibition.

On Tuesday, the company announced that its latest exhibition will be located in a portion of what is currently the Cinemark complex at Howard Hughes L.A.

The rest of the multiplex is expected to remain open to moviegoers, a company spokesperson told the L.A. Times.

The exhibit, which will be the company’s sixth permanent installation, will open in 2026.

“This is more than an immersive experience,” Jose Tolosa, CEO of Meow Wolf, said in a statement.

“We want it to be a part of the city’s ongoing narrative of growth. Being in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, we’re humbled to add to the dynamic interplay between art and entertainment here. Meow Wolf Los Angeles will blur the lines between reality and fantasy, inviting everyone to become part of a living, breathing spectacle.”

The Santa Fe, N.M.-based company announced plans to expand to Southern California earlier in May.

Meow Wolf’s exhibitions can be considered part art museum, part escape room and part playhouse. The company has opened locations in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, the Dallas-Fort Worth metro and Denver. An additional exhibition in Houston is on the way.

Each location has a theme. For example, in Santa Fe, visitors explore an odd family home full of hidden surprises, and in Las Vegas, visitors journey through an interactive grocery store.

KTLA’s technology reporter Rich DeMuro visited the Las Vegas location, known as Omega Mart, in 2021.

“I went to Omega Mart not knowing what to expect,” DeMuro wrote. “I knew it was art and full of techy surprises, but the actual place just wowed me. Basically, the premise is that it’s a grocery store, but you quickly discover hidden passageways to a world where you can spend hours exploring.”

The Meow Wolf expansion news comes just weeks after the company laid off 165 workers in a cost-saving venture, according to KTLA sister station KDVR in Denver.

The company says more details about its L.A. location, including a theme, will be announced in the coming months.
