Mel Gibson Hospitalized for a Week After Contracting Coronavirus
Mel Gibson spent a week in the hospital after testing positive to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Gibson, 64, fell ill with the potentially deadly virus back in April and has since made a full recovery, PEOPLE has confirmed.
"He tested positive in April and spent a week in the hospital," the star's rep told PEOPLE. "He was treated with the drug Remdesivir, while in the hospital, and has tested negative numerous times since then as well as positive for the antibodies."
The actor was treated at a Los Angeles, California hospital.
Australian news outlet The Daily Telegraph was the first to report news of the star's health scare.
Gibson was spotted at a grocery store in California with girlfriend Rosalind Ross just in March shortly before his hospitalization. Gibson and Ross, who began dating in 2014, welcomed their first child together in 2017. The toddler, Lars Gerard, is Gibson’s 9th child and Ross’ first.

While the often-controversial actor kept his health battle private, Gibson tested positive just weeks after fellow actor Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson also contracted the virus.
The couple opened up about getting COVID-19 on March 11.
“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” Hanks wrote.
“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?”

The pair has since fully recovered and flew back to America at the end of March. Since then, the United States has seen a catastrophic increase in cases of the deadly virus.
As of Thursday, nationwide more than 4,040,200 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 144,000 have died, according to The New York Times.
