Maya Rudolph Says Husband Paul Thomas Anderson Knew He Was 'Going to Marry' Her After Seeing Her in a Sketch

The couple has been together for over two decades and share four children

Maya Rudolph’s husband Paul Thomas Anderson felt it was love at first sight when he first saw the star.

In a new interview with Town & Country for their May cover, the Loot actress, 51, recalls how her love story began with the filmmaker, 53.

“He said he saw me in a sketch and said, ‘That’s the girl I’m going to marry.’ But I don’t know. I wasn’t there. Maybe he just told me that to be sweet,” the Saturday Night Live alum told the publication.

Apparently Anderson had attended one of SNL's afterparties with his intentions specifically set on meeting Rudolph.

The couple, who has been together for over two decades, are known to keep their relationship out of the limelight. Together, they share four children — Pearl, 18, Lucille, 14, Jack, 12, and Minnie, 10.

Reflecting on her time at New York’s Studio 8H in Rockefeller Plaza, Rudolph opened up on how that eventually clashed with growing her family.

“I thought, This is all going great! I’d always wanted to have kids. I’d always wanted to live in New York. I’d always wanted to be on Saturday Night Live,” Rudolph said during her interview.

However, Anderson, a California native, was set on moving back to Los Angeles where many of his film sets are based.

He has worked on projects such as Boogie Nights, The Master, Punch-Drunk Love, Phantom Thread and Licorice Pizza, among many others — and has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and eight BAFTA Awards.

The Bridesmaids alum did her best with commuting, flying back from New York to Los Angeles to continue as a cast member on SNL, sometimes with her eldest daughter in tow.

“This little bald baby, listening to the musical guests warm up. I look back and I can’t believe I did that. It was crazy. I don’t think I slept for two years,” Rudolph recalled.

Speaking to the magazine, Rudolph also opened up on how she chooses which roles to tackle next.

“I think half the stuff I did is because a friend said, ‘Will you come and do this?’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, that sounds fun.’ I never really knew what direction I was going to go in,” Rudolph explained. “I still don’t want to know. I want it to be informed by what I’d like to do, as opposed to what I’m supposed to do. I think that’s when it’s the most fun and the most alive.”

As for her and Anderson’s kids, they have seemingly already been bit by the acting bug.

In 2020, Rudolph shared with PEOPLE that her kids already had a love for performing. "We have a lot of living room shows," she said of her family, "but I'm usually told to sit down and watch!"

"They'll dance to anything," she said. "They're natural hams."
