Criminal Minds may be airing its official revival this fall, but it looks like original cast member Matthew Gray Gubler has other plans.

On September 21, it was announced on Instagram that Criminal Minds: Evolution would be coming to Paramount+ on November 24. While fans will be thrilled to see the BAU back at their old desks (like Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook and Aisha Tyler, to name a few) alongside new faces, many might a certain boy genius missing. ICYMI: Back in July, news broke that Matthew won't be returning to the procedural drama as Dr. Spencer Reid.

Amid the reboot's latest release date news, Criminal Minds fans couldn't help but wonder what the actor has been up to since the first version of Criminal Minds ended in 2020. As it turns out, there's some insight into his current life, thanks to a video he recently shared on Instagram. In the video clip posted on September 20, Matthew excitedly slides down a ramp atop a snow tube. It was his way of welcoming the fall season.

When fans saw Matthew re-emerge on social media at the same time as the newest Criminal Minds news, they immediately flooded his comments section with their thoughts.

"I love how [you] awaken in autumn and then disappear for the next year until it’s just about halloween," one person wrote. "I come home from work to a timeline of you screaming and I couldn't be happier. Happy Gublerween Matthew," another follower commented. "Your fan family has missed you! Can’t wait for more spooky posts! We love you! ❤️❤️," a different fan added.

Despite the thrill of seeing our favorite Criminal Minds star back in action, it begs the question of how Reid will be folded into the new reboot. According to showrunner Erica Messer, we'll definitely see remnants of the character, along with hopes of potentially seeing him and fellow actor Daniel Henney, who exited the show as Special Agent Matt Simmons after debuting in season 13.

"It’s a little bit of a mystery what Reid and Simmons are up to, but they’re certainly not forgotten," she told TVLine in September. “Dr. Reid’s and I believe Matt Simmons’ desks are still there, still have stuff on it ... Like, if any of you went back [to the office after the pandemic], you still have stuff on your desk that was there for two years. So we’re definitely playing that. But [Spencer and Matt] are not gone gone."

She continued: "Our hope is that the team members we ended the series with on CBS will be able to come back and play at some point, but everybody does have other projects. We started shooting in August and we’re going to be wrapped in December… so there was a short window to try to get all of our friends to play."

Until that day potentially comes, we're just glad to see Matthew doing well and embracing his yearly tradition of welcoming the autumn season.
