"Rest in peace Lou Gossett Jr. one of my fave acting heroes. Hung out with him years ago at the Toronto film festival ... I bailed at 2 AM as he bid me good evening and strolled down the street with a girl on each arm," Grier, 67, wrote alongside a throwback snapshot of Gossett.

He added to the hilarious anecdote, "I saw him at breakfast the next morning and he winked at me saying 'You couldn’t hang, could you?' My man!!!!!! 🤴🏾🙏🏾🕊️🙏🏾."

The Associated Press was first to report news of Gossett's death after the actor's nephew told the outlet he died Thursday night in Santa Monica, California. No cause of death has yet been revealed.

"It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning," Gossett Jr.'s family said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE Friday. "We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family's privacy during this difficult time."

Gossett is survived by his two adult sons, Satie and Sharron.
