Local artist to discuss graphic art tonight in Monroe

MONROE — A local graphic artist who is working on a new art walk in the city of Monroe will speak tonight.

Haylee Glashauser, an account executive for the Monroe-base sign company Fastsigns, will present at 6:30 tonight at the United Way of Monroe and Lenawee Counties, 216 N. Monroe St. in Monroe. The event is free and open to the public.

“I am presenting an app called Procreate. It is a digital art form with multiple medias,” Glashauser said.

The program is sponsored by the Monroe Art League.

“We met Haylee while working on a new project for ‘Art Walk in the Park’ that the city and Monroe Art League are planning for Cappuccilli Park,” said Eve Weatherholt, Monroe Art League president.

“(We will) create an art walk that can be viewed by the town during walks in the park. Completion date is still to be determined,” Glashauser said.

Glashauser has a background in visual communications and teaching, Weatherholt said. She’s a self-taught artist.

“I have always been creative, but I have no formal training. I continue my work by learning from others and YouTube and Google. I do a lot of nail art and small acrylic paintings, but no training,” Glashauser said.

She most enjoys the flexibility graphic art offers.

"Graphic helps me to correct mistakes easier, layer, erase," she said. "It's much faster and cleaner than on canvas. I can get the exact colors, textures and brushes for every job with only one pen and one device. I enjoy being able to change colors quickly and not wait for dry time or get frustrated when something ends up looking off, as it’s easy to push and pull colors to the right spaces and change if it’s no longer matching the aesthetic I’m going for."

"I’d like to thank the art league for the opportunity to show off a new form of art that can inspire, not only the league, but future members of the league," she said.

Weatherholt said the Monroe Art League is hoping to gain new members and expand to newer types of art. In October, it hosted Kody Clark, who creates Halloween-inspired art from found objects.

“Graphic art is not new by any account, but it is relatively 'new' compared to traditional artists," Weatherholt said. "The MAL would like to invite more young artists to our membership and, in order to do that, we simply must ... embrace their art forms and mediums."
