MARYLAND (DC News Now) — The “Blair Witch Project” is getting a revival, Lionsgate announced on Thursday.

The famous horror film, which was released in 1999, takes place near Burkittsville in Montgomery County and follows three student filmmakers. It was a hit on release, earning $248 million and inspiring two sequels.

The original movie, often viewed as a staple in the horror genre, was an early film in the “found footage” style of movie and inspired many similar movies afterward.

The Associated Press reported that Lionsgate will be teaming up with Blumhouse for the revival. The movie will “be the first in a multi-year pact between Jason Blum’s Company and Lionsgate.”

Blumhouse is behind the horror movies “The Purge,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and “M3GAN,” among others.

“I’m a huge admirer of ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ which brought the idea of found footage horror to mainstream audiences and became a true cultural phenomenon,” Blum said in a statement that The Associated Press quoted. “I don’t think there would have been a ‘Paranormal Activity’ had there not first been a ‘Blair Witch,’ so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.”
