Brittney Griner is finally telling her story.

And what a story it is, one worthy of prime time — which is exactly the treatment it’s getting.

Griner, the WNBA star who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, was arrested in Russia in 2022 when customs found vape cartridges with small amounts of cannabis oil in her luggage. She would be found guilty and sentenced to nine years in prison — and not just any prison, but one of the most notorious women’s prisons in Russia. She would not be released for more than 10 months until she was sent home as part of a prison exchange.

She’s since returned to the Mercury and re-signed with the team.

What channel is the Brittney Griner interview on?

"Prison in Russia: The Brittney Griner Interview," Robin Roberts one-hour talk with Griner, is scheduled to air on “20/20,” ABC’s news magazine show, on Wednesday, May 1.

As is often the case with big interviews, the network has parceled out excerpts on its morning show, “Good Morning America.” In a trailer for the interview, Roberts asks Griner what she thought when she realized she had mistakenly brought along the cartridges.

“My life is over right here,” Griner says.

On Monday’s “GMA” excerpt, Roberts asked Griner what she thought when she was arrested. “What is racing through your mind at that time?” Roberts asks.

“Just everything that I’m not going to see,” Griner says. “I’m thinking about my wife, thinking about what my family’s going to think, thinking about what public opinion’s going to think. I can just see the headlines. I could just visualize everything I worked so hard for just crumbling and going away.”

Another excerpt is scheduled for Wednesday's "GMA."

The interview is just part of a deal Griner signed with Disney, which also includes a four-part documentary from ESPN Films and a scripted series developed with ABC Signature.

Griner also has a memoir, “Coming Home,” scheduled for release on Thursday, May 9.

Her story was also told in comic book form in January 2022 with the release of “Female Force: Brittney Griner.” It follows Griner’s journey of exploration of her sexuality and identity alongside her growth as a basketball star.
