Law and Order: Special Victims Unit will soon be airing its 500th episode, and to celebrate it's planning on bringing back fan-favourite character Nick Amaro.

The long-running police procedural, alongside Dick Wolf Entertainment, took to Instagram on Tuesday, September 28 to share the news, posting a photo of Pino with the attached announcement.

Later, Pino tweeted: "So…anything new #SVUDiehards? #SVU500."

"Oh, you have no idea. Welcome home," screenwriter Julie Martin replied, as a fan gushed: "THIS IS THE BEST NEWS."

"I've had the biggest grin on my face since the news dropped. I'm so happy you'll be back for a visit," another added, as someone else exclaimed: "I MISSED YOU SO MUCH."

"So thrilled! But we better find out Nick is living the happy life he deserves," another user wrote back.

Viewers last saw Detective Amaro, Rollins' former partner, at the end of season 16, when he was facing up to consequences of mistakenly shooting an unarmed teenager. For now, it's uncertain whether the character will actually be a part of the SVU anymore when he returns, or whether Pino's upcoming appearance will be a one-off or a fully-fledged comeback.

He'll next be seen on screen in Dear Evan Hansen, opposite Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Booksmart's Kaitlyn Dever and Pitch Perfect's Ben Platt, who plays the titular high school student.

Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
