The Largest Collection of Princess Diana's Belongings Since 1997 Heads to Auction

Princess Diana's Belonging Are Heading to AuctionAnwar Hussein

One of the largest collections of Princess Diana's gowns, suits, handbags, and more is heading to auction this summer.

"Julien’s is honored to present this historic auction that will celebrate Princess Diana’s iconic fashion style and her reign as the People’s Princess and will be the largest Diana collection to come to auction in 27 years," Martin Nolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions said in a release.

Titled Princess Diana's Elegance & A Royal Collection, the sale will consist of some of Princess Diana's most notable garments. There's the glamorous Murray Arbeid midnight blue strapless tulle Diamante Star gown that she wore twice in 1986; once at the Phantom of the Opera Premiere and to a dinner at Claridge's for King Constantine of Greece (est. $200,000-$400,000). Alongside that gown, is the magenta silk and lace evening dress by Victor Edelstein that she wore in London and in Germany in 1987 (est. $200,00-$400,000). Edelstein was one of her favorite designers, and was also responsible for the iconic look Diana wore while dancing with John Travolta at the White House.

Some of Princess Diana's pieces designed by Catherine Walker will also be sold, including a pink floral dress ($100,000-$200,000), and a yellow and navy skirt suit that she was photographed wearing during a 1989 visit to Hong Kong ($30,000-$50,000).

The sale will take place in person and online at juliensauctions.com on June 27 (bidding begins on the site at 10 a.m. GMT). A portion of the proceeds will be donated to muscular dystrophy-related charities in the United Kingdom. Before bidding begins, some of the highlights of the sale will be featured in a series of pop-ups in Hong Kong (from April 18 to April 29) and at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge, Ireland (from June 11 to June 27).

"We are also delighted to bring back many of Diana’s favorite fashion ensembles to Asia and Europe that she wore on some of her highly publicized international royal appearances and humanitarian efforts such as her Catherine Walker suit from her 1989 visit to Hong Kong. Furthermore, this showcase in Hong Kong represents Julien’s efforts to expand our presence and development in the region and our leadership in the auctions of Royal Fashion," Nolan says.
