La Dame Blanche: The Cuban flautist and hip-hop star

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Performing at this year’s Festival International, La Dame Blanche marries Latin hip-hop with the magical sounds of the flute.

Yaite Ramos Rodriguez, better know as her stage name La Dame Blanche, was born in western Cuba. Her father, Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos, the artistic director of the Buena Vista Social Club orchestra, sparked her love for music. He is also the reason Rodriguez began playing the flute at a young age.

Having grown up in Cuba, Rodriguez was surrounded by the dance and music that would eventually inspire her own work. In addition to the sounds of the Caribbean, her classical training with the flute would fuse together to create the one of a kind music La Dame Blanche is known for.

Over traditional hip-hop beats, La Dame Blanche can be heard rapping in Spanish as sounds of the flute weave throughout the music. Through her pro-women lyrism, she covers the topics of beauty standards, domestic violence and flirtation in her music.

To hear La Dame Blanche’s genre defining music, you can stop by the Scene LUS stage at 4:15 p.m. on April 27.
