Have you ever read a sentence that just gets better the longer it goes on? Try this one on for size: The director of the psychedelic Nicolas Cage horror movie Mandy is making a new thriller about vampires in 1980s Los Angeles starring Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac. Do you need a second to take that all in? I do.

Flesh of the Gods, the next film from Italian-Canadian director Panos Cosmatos, will follow a married couple (Stewart and Isaac) living in an L.A. high-rise who encounter “a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence,” per a producer summary supplied to The Hollywood Reporter. (Cosmatos himself painted a more vivid picture, telling the outlet that the movie “will take you on a hot rod joy ride deep into the glittering heart of hell.”)

The stars of *Love Lies Bleeding* are proving that lesbian film can be shocking, sexy, and strange.

Much of the hype for this announcement can be explained by the rapturous response to Mandy, which cast Cage as a Pacific Northwest lumberjack who exacts revenge on a cult that kidnaps his girlfriend. A surreal, hyperviolent thriller shot with incredible practical effects and downright sumptuous lighting, Mandy scored big with critics, and has earned a substantial cult following.

The fact that K-Stew and Poe Dameron himself are on board only adds to the excitement. Stewart is fresh off her press tour for A24’s sapphic crime movie Love Lies Bleeding while Oscar Isaac — a vocal LGBTQ+ ally and an aspiring Drag Race judge — is continuing his string of post-Star Wars projects, including Dune and Moon Knight.

Flesh of the Gods is written by Cosmatos and Andrew Kevin Walker of Se7en fame, and it will tentatively begin shooting later this year. While there’s no distribution for the film yet, it’s all but guaranteed to get snapped up at the Cannes Film Festival. I’m already preparing myself for the Kristen Stewart vampire-themed photo shoots.
