Did you know you have superpowers? Neil deGrasse Tyson says it's true.
In 2014 relaunch of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, host Neil deGrasse Tyson followed his predecessor Carl Sagan and brought “the universe down to Earth.” With the long-awaited new season, the show will not only explore the past and present, but what might await us in the future too.
As executive producer and writer Ann Druyan notes in a newly released trailer for Cosmos: Possible Worlds, “The heart of our show is this nucleus of hope. Cosmos takes you to the thrilling future we can still have.” That thought was very much in the spirit of our conversation with Tyson when he came by Yahoo Entertainment”s suite at the San Diego Comic-Con. When asked about the idea of human beings one day having superpowered abilities, Tyson told us we already have them.
“We fly through the air at 500 miles an hour at 35,000 feet for 2,500 miles,” Tyson told us. “And if you told that someone a hundred years ago, they’d think you were crazy. We do have superpowers. I can walk around and know exactly where I am on Earth to the meter. Whereas centuries went by in the history of exploration not knowing our longitude on Earth. So we have superpowers brought to us by the methods and tools of science and the implementation of technology and engineering.
“And so, of course, this reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke’s edict: ‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,’” Tyson intoned, quoting the acclaimed sci-fi author and futurist’s influential book Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry Into the Limits of the Possible. “Not enough of us, certainly those who are born into a [world of] technology stop and reflect how amazing it is, what we have at our fingertips. I do all the time.”
