Sometimes the universe has far different ideas than the ones in your head — which is precisely why, when speaking about conceiving with fiancé Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst admits her pregnancy was a “surprise.” Not in the way you might think, though. In a new interview with Net-a-Porter, Dunst opened up about why the first-time parents were taken aback when they found out they were expecting son Ennis, now 15 months old.

When you hear “surprise” and “pregnancy” in the same sentence, it’s easy to assume the pregnancy wasn’t planned. Perhaps it was an “oops, I forgot to take my birth control this month” moment. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with Dunst and Plemons. Rather, it sounds like conceiving was a very intentional decision for the couple… they just didn’t realize it would happen as soon as it did. “I thought I would have a hard time getting pregnant, but it was a surprise,” the actress confessed to Net-a-Porter. “If I hadn’t met Jesse, I would have frozen my eggs. [But] it feels like I lucked out.”

Still, Dunst joked that getting pregnant when they did mean making adjustments to other timelines in their life. Read: They’ve been engaged for four years. “My mom was like, ‘But when are you guys getting married?’ And I said, ‘Mom, I’m not going to get married when I’m pregnant. I want to have fun and have a drink. I mean, we’re paying for this wedding. I’m paying for the bar! I want to enjoy it.'”

Dunst is no stranger to the magic of timing. She and Plemons met while shooting the dark TV comedy Fargo and, although she instantly “knew he was going to be a soulmate,” they didn’t become a couple until after the series ended.

“He’s my favorite actor — the best I’ve ever worked with,” Dunst gushed revealing of their relationship timeline. “I just knew he would be in my life forever. I didn’t know what capacity that would be at the time. When the show was over, I just missed him terribly. We didn’t get together until a year later. We were both smart enough that we were wondering if the connection was just because we were working together. But it was real.”
