Lately, there has been more drama behind the scenes of “Yellowstone” than onscreen. But star Kevin Costner says he hopes to rejoin the show, despite some complex contract disagreements.

The second part of Season 5 is reportedly debuting in November, and Costner spoke with Entertainment Tonight about his hopes of coming back.

“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” he said. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”

If he does return to the fold, Costner has some ideas on potential storylines.

“Well, you know, he needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how it might be,” he said, “but that’s Taylor’s thing. I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”

Costner’s contract disagreements have kept new episodes of “Yellowstone” on ice. In February 2023, Variety reported that the actor’s increasingly limited shooting schedule put his role on the show in jeopardy. Costner had allegedly wanted to reduce his time on set to work on his upcoming film saga “Horizon,” the first chapter of which is out in June.

In September, he threatened to sue producers over lost salary as a result of being released from the series, saying, “I couldn’t help them any more. We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons, there were issues with the creative.”

In November, it was announced that “Yellowstone” would continue filming in spring 2024 and the fifth season would be its last. The most recent new episode of “Yellowstone” aired on Jan. 1, 2023.
