Attending a red carpet, gorgeous gowns and impeccable makeup aside, can be quite stressful. In addition to having to find the right angle and pose for thousands of camera flashes, celebrities also have photographers shouting their names and security pushing them along as they go.

During Kelly Rowland‘s red carpet appearance at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, for example, the singer and actress was anything but happy. And while the cameras caught her arguing and pointing fingers at a female security guard, her recent explanation of what happened told us everything we needed to know.

“That woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” she told AP News at the amfAR Cannes Gala on May 23. “I have a boundary and I stand by those boundaries.”

As she answered the question, Rowland got clearly teary-eyed, showing the moment really rocked her. “There were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me and they didn’t get scolded or pushed off, or told to get off,” Rowland said. “I stood my ground and she felt like she had to stand hers. But I stood my ground.”

Considering that Rowland was feeling targeted and threatened, we’re applauding her for standing up for herself and making sure she didn’t let mistreatment slide.

In the comments for AP’s video on Instagram (see it HERE!), dozens of fans are praising her for doing just that. “Know your boundaries; stand your ground fairly and proudly. Breaking barriers for others. 👏👏👏👏” wrote one commenter. “I can tell it hurts her to be treated that way,” another wrote, acknowledging her fighting back tears. “People don’t talk about how it’s painful to HAVE to stand your ground.”

Knowing that Cannes is one of the most well-respected celebrity and film events in the world, it’s a shame Rowland was treated so unfairly and unjustly.

As a reminder, Daily Mail‘s lip-reading expert, Jacqui Press, claimed that Rowland snapped at the usher during the carpet saying, “Don’t talk to me like that.” The row seemed to escalate as a male usher stepped in and Rowland doubled down with, “You still don’t talk to me like that.”

Since that carpet, however, Rowland has already returned to the red carpet by attending the amfAR Gala and the Le Comte De Monte-Cristo premiere in gorgeous looks. Here’s hoping that the security guard was nowhere near her.
