Kelly Ripa is starting to go gray, but she’s not sure about pulling the plug on her signature blonde locks just yet. It’s an understandable dilemma for anyone who is used to coloring their hair: Do you go with the flow with a lower maintenance look, or do you keep up with the hair color you’ve had for decades?

The 53-year-old talk show host explained her situation to the audience during Wednesday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark. “I got my hair colored last night, and I cannot tell you how long it takes now to cover my gray hair,” she revealed. “It takes hours and hours, and I swear this morning, I still see gray hair. My hair wants to be gray. It just wants to be gray.” Her husband, Mark Consuelos, wanted to know if she was up for “letting the gray happen?

That might seem like a simple answer, just do it when you are ready, but Ripa doesn’t think it’s the right move for her for this fascinating reason. “I would do it. I just don’t think, you know, you’ve seen my gray hair. It’s not like a gorgeous silver or a pretty white. It’s almost like, translucent,” she said. “It’s almost translucent in its quality, which I think is weird. It’s almost like colorless hair.”

Ripa has been thinking about the gray hair situation ever since the lockdown period of the pandemic when she was on “root watch.” While that was a minor worry during the global panic at the time, celebrities like Andie MacDowell decided that this was the end of their hair-dye era. “I’m much more comfortable. I think it suits me. It feels correct for me,” she shared with SheKnows in 2023. “For instance, I’ll be walking through the airport now and these people will say, ‘You look great.’ I know they’re talking like they really appreciate me being my age, fearlessly being my age.”

So, Ripa has time to decide whether she’s ready to rock the gray hair and she has plenty of other gray-blonde celebrity role models. Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow have managed to strike a gentle balance with their gray roots and blonde tresses, and perhaps Ripa will soon be ready to master this sleek and stylish look, too.
