Fans watched Kelly Clarkson’s divorce from Brandon Blackstock drag on for months because his legal team argued every single detail of their split. Some of the moves felt petty and mean-spirited, and it’s likely why everyone is rooting her on as she tackles an even bigger legal case from their professional relationship.

During their seven-year marriage, Blackstock served as his then-wife’s manager through his father Narvel Blackstock’s company, Starstruck Entertainment. The big point of contention in the legal case surrounds the allegations that they acted as unlicensed talent agents in the state of California, which violates state labor laws. The 41-year-old entertainer is seeking “any and all commissions, fees, profits, advances, producing fees or other monies,” per Rolling Stone. While this is obviously a case for the courts, the emotional significance of winning this case would mean so much more to Clarkson.

“Filing this lawsuit against Brandon had nothing to do with her alimony payments,” an insider told Us Weekly, “It’s about fighting for what she feels is right and owed to her.” The legal tug-of-war has taken its toll on Clarkson, but she’s going to fight her ex-husband and ex-father-in-law every step of the way. She “knows she can never completely wash her hands of Brandon because they are her children’s father, but she also won’t be taken advantage of,” the source added.

Clarkson already has the California Labor Commissioner on her side after ordering Blackstock to repay $2.6 million in commissions for violating the state’s Talent Agencies Act by securing her work on The Voice, Wayfair, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), and the Billboard Music Awards. Blackstock appealed the decision and asked for a trial with the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The “Since U Been Gone” singer’s ex might have underestimated Clarkson’s steely reserve, though. She decided to file the cross-complaint to his appeal by asking for a “complete accounting” at Starstruck Entertainment, going back to 2007 when they first began representing her. So far, the talk show host has the California law on her side, and it’s why she’s putting up such a fight. It might be the toughest battle of Clarkson’s career, but she is ready for justice to be served.
