Kathryn Bigelow's adaptation of David Koepp's novel Aurora is no longer in development at Netflix, as reported by The New York Times.

The two-time Oscar winner was set to direct the film, which follows divorced mother, Aubrey, who must protect her teenager after a solar storm hits Earth. As chaos ensues across the world, Aubrey reconnects with her estranged wealthy Silicon Valley CEO brother, Thom, who is riding out the storm in a luxury bunker.

Bigelow hasn't made a feature film since 2017, when she directed John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore and Will Poulter in Detroit.

Aurora was the only project she was attached to direct, so what's now next from the director is unknown. Her reasons for leaving the project are unclear, but reportedly, Netflix is entering a chapter that will push for audience reach over funding director's passion projects as they have previously done with Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story.

The priority is now to "produce a more varied slate of movies to better appeal to the array of interests among subscribers," as per the NYT.

Whether Aurora will see the light of day at Netflix is another story. It is unclear whether they have scrapped the project entirely or if they intend to start the hunt for a new director to take the reigns.

Either way, Kathryn Bigelow will not be part of the process.
