Kate Hudson Says Her Relationship with Her Father Bill Hudson Is 'Warming Up': 'I Have No Expectation'

Kate Hudson is opening up about the current status of her relationship with her father, Bill Hudson.

In a short preview from her upcoming appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, Kate, 45, said she still does not have much of a relationship with Bill, 74, a musician and actor known for his '70s group, The Hudson Brothers.

"I don’t really have one. But it’s — it’s warming up. There’s warming up with this all happening," she said. "But it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have — I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy."

Kate's mother, Goldie Hawn, shares the Glass Onion star and her brother, Oliver Hudson, with Bill, whom Goldie was married to from 1976 to 1982. After Goldie and Bill divorced, she began dating her longtime partner, Kurt Russell, in 1983; the two primarily raised Kate and Oliver, 47, alongside Kurt's son, Boston, and Kurt and Goldie's son, Wyatt Russell.

Both Kate and Oliver have openly shared in the past how they were estranged from Bill for a significant period of time. Oliver stated in 2018 that he and Bill were keeping in touch for the first time in years. More recently, he opened up about attending a week-long course designed to unpack his relationships with his parents on Sibling Revelry, the podcast he and Kate co-host together.

Kate, who is releasing her debut album, Glorious, on May 17, said on iHeartMedia's Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast in February 2023 that she avoided embracing a life in music due to her complicated relationship with her biological father.

"Earlier on in my career, I thought I would definitely [pursue] music, but then Almost Famous happened," she said at the time. "Later, I kind of rejected it because, [I thought] as you do when you're dealing with daddy issues, I don't want to connect to that part because that's my dad. If that one connection I had to him, I failed miserably at, it would be devastating to me — I wasn't ready for that."

Kate announced her debut album's release on April 17; she told CBS Sunday Morning in this new interview that she has had people in her life tell her not to pursue releasing songs she has written and recorded. "It was when I was in my early thirties. And they basically said, 'It’s done, it’s passed. You can’t, you’re too old,' " she recalled.

Kate added, "And you know, for me, it wasn’t just about being a performer, it was about wanting to write music. So, um, it kind of like, kind of resonated there for a bit. And then I was like, 'Eh, f--- you.' "
