Jon Stewart pokes fun at New Jersey in a Menendez trial segment on 'The Daily Show'

Comedian Jon Stewart had a segment on Monday night's "The Daily Show" in which he poked fun at New Jersey while discussing the Sen. Bob Menendez corruption trial.

The jury selection process has begun in the trial. Stewart played a clip from WCBS-NY in which the reporter said the defense attorneys proposed asking potential jurors if they have opinions about people from New Jersey and whether they think that being from New Jersey makes them more likely to commit a crime.

The clip was met with laughs from the audience, and Stewart, pretending to be angry, cursed about the questioning.

He then said, "You bury one union leader at your football stadium while running a human organ trafficking ring through some Secaucus rabbis, and suddenly your whole state is a suspect," referring to the 2009 rabbi corruption probe and the mysterious disappearance of union leader Jimmy Hoffa.

He made more jokes about New Jersey and its alleged mob connections, with a reference to Tony Soprano from the television show "The Sopranos."

Stewart is a New Jersey native and grew up in Lawrenceville, in Mercer County.

His lines were jokes, but they also echoed the Italian New Jersey stereotype punchlines that were seen across the internet after Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito gained popularity.

Unlike with DeVito, this Stewart material has not seen much backlash. It was just a part of a longer segment on the show about the Menendez trial.

The New Jersey senator is facing 16 criminal charges including bribery, fraud and acting as a foreign agent, and he will be tried alongside two New Jersey businessmen in federal court. His wife will be tried separately. The Menendez case has been a topic of discussion for months during the long process leading up to the trial.
