John Oliver Concerned Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Are Not What They Seem

Many liberals and moderate conservatives seem to have hope that Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, are positively influencing Donald Trump. On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver shared his concerns that they may not be influencing Trump as much as people think.

One of the many areas the public thinks Ivanka will influence her dad’s policies is climate change. And when she brought Al Gore to Trump Tower to meet with her father, it seemed like she was making progress. But it didn’t seem to have much effect, as Oliver pointed out, saying, “Unfortunately, just three days later, Trump named climate change denier Scott Pruitt to head the EPA.” Oliver jokingly added, “And maybe that’s an example of Ivanka’s moderating influence. Maybe Trump’s initial choice was a guy strangling a dolphin with a six-pack ring”

While Ivanka has been in the public eye for a long time, Oliver claimed that not much is really known about Jared Kushner, other than he went to Harvard. Although that was, apparently, despite his not having the SAT scores or GPA to warrant going there, which Oliver commented, “I’m sure it’s nothing to do with the fact his father pledged $2.5 million to the school shortly before he was admitted.”

While Oliver seemed to eviscerate the new Washington power couple, he wanted everyone to know that wasn’t possible. Oliver said, “I don’t know enough about them to eviscerate them. Just as you don’t know enough about them to justify putting any real hopes in them.” And Oliver had an alarming message for those people who are putting their hopes in them, saying, “If they are the reason you are sleeping at night, you should probably still be awake.”

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
