"I'd just repeat things Dr. Ruth said," the comedian recalls of being 5 and cracking jokes in an upcoming episode of 'My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman'

John Mulaney's comedic chops came in at a very young age!

In a sneak peek of his upcoming appearance on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, the stand-up comedian, 41, shares the hilarious ways he used to practice his jokes on his parents' colleagues when he was just 5-years-old.

While visiting his Chicago high school, Mulaney opens up about how his father would host summer parties at their home for his law firm.

"I'd watch Dr. Ruth on TV. I was, like, five, and I walk up to his different partners, and I go, 'I'm gonna be a sex therapist,'" he says with a laugh. "They'd go, 'What?' And I go, 'Sex is an experience of life.'"

When David Letterman gives him props for thinking of a "pretty edgy, esoteric stuff" at such a young age, the Big Mouth star says that it was a "very funny bit to do."

"I think I knew it's funny that you're five, holding a Schweppes, walkin' around," he quips.

After detailing an intervention his famous friends organized on his behalf, he joked that the meeting was "star-studded."

"As mad as I was when I walked in there, I was like, 'This is a good lineup.' It was like a 'We Are the World' of alternative comedians over the age of 40," he said in his special. "All comedians, yet no one said a funny thing the entire night. Before I got there, they promised each other that they wouldn't do bits."

He added, "Do you know what it's like for 12 people to save your life? It's too many people," Mulaney said in the special. "There are 12 separate people out there who, if I'm at dinner with them, I have to be like, 'No, I got that. Come on. You saved my life — over Zoom.'"
