Joey King isn't closing the door on playing Gypsy Rose Blanchard again: 'Never say never'

The "We Were the Lucky Ones" star got an Emmy nomination for playing Blanchard, recently released from prison, in "The Act."

She earned rave reviews and an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Gypsy Rose Blanchard in Hulu's 2019 limited series The Act, but Joey King isn't quick to say she'd play Blanchard again following her recent release from prison.

"I always say, never say never, but I don't think it's something that's on anyone's radar right now, in terms of my own and jumping in there again," the actress, who's currently starring in Hulu's We Were the Lucky Ones, tells Entertainment Weekly's The Awardist podcast. "I never want to say never, but I also don't think that is something that's going to happen anytime soon, but mostly I wish her the most peaceful free life that she can possibly have now."

Blanchard's life isn't short on inspiration for a new series or even a movie: She was released early from prison in December 2023, some two years short of her 10-year sentence for second-degree murder for her role in the death of her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. (Gypsy's then-boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, was charged with first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for stabbing Dee Dee 17 times.) While in prison, she married Louisiana teacher Ryan Anderson, but the two separated in March 2024. Earlier this month, Blanchard told PEOPLE that she was preparing to undergo cosmetic surgery.

For years, Dee Dee lied about Gypsy Rose having various medical conditions including leukemia and muscular dystrophy; she was confined to a wheelchair and was often given a feeding tube when she was, in fact, not ill. Though she can never be officially diagnosed, many believe Dee Dee had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental illness that the Cleveland Clinic describes as a person acting “as if an individual he or she is caring for has a physical or mental illness when the person is not really sick."

In The Act, King played Gypsy Rose opposite Patricia Arquette, who won an Emmy for her performance as Dee Dee.
