It has been quite the year for Joe Alwyn.

A year after his much-buzzed-about breakup from girlfriend of six years Taylor Swift, which PEOPLE confirmed in April 2023, the English actor's screen career has been keeping him busy.

Alwyn, 33, is next slated to appear in Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, in which he will costar with frequent Lanthimos collaborator (and close friend to Swift, 34) Emma Stone. It was announced on April 11 that the movie is set to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, with a U.S. release June 21.

"Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader," reads an official synopsis for the movie.

Also starring in the film — which will mark Alwyn's second big-screen collaboration with Lanthimos, 50, after The Favourite (2018) — are Willem DafoeMargaret QualleyJesse PlemonsHong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schaefer.

Alwyn has stepped out at multiple public events over the past year, including to the Soho Place theater in London to take in a performance of the play adaptation of Brokeback Mountain in June 2023. (Zendaya and Tom Holland were also there.)

This past February, the actor attended the Dunhill & BSBP pre-BAFTAs filmmakers dinner and party in London, where he posed alongside his Conversations with Friends costar Alison Oliver.

At the end of the night, the Harriet star was spotted departing the event alongside actresses Ellie Bamber and Saffron Hocking. The trio hopped into a car outside the venue, as seen in photos obtained by the Daily Mail.

Over the course of their relationship, Alwyn and Swift, who began dating in 2016, kept their cards close to the chest, deflecting about engagement rumors.

"If I had a pound for every time I think I've been told I've been engaged, then I'd have a lot of pound coins,"  Alwyn previously quipped in a conversation with WSJ. Magazine.

The pair also began collaborating on music together over the COVID-19 pandemic, culminating in a Grammy Awards win. 2020 sister albums Folklore and Evermore each included collaborations with Alwyn, who wrote several songs under the pseudonym William BoweryFolklore ended up taking home the 2021 Grammy for album of the year, while Evermore was nominated for the same award at the 2022 ceremony.

Shortly after Swift and Alwyn split, a source told PEOPLE that they ultimately broke up due to "differences in their personalities." The insider went on to say that the duo learned they "weren't the right fit for one another" after emerging from their pandemic "bubble."

Alwyn's first public appearance following his breakup from the Lover singer came at last year's Cannes Film Festival in May, to attend a dinner hosted by Celine artistic director Hedi Slimane.

Swift — who has moved on with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce — is currently still in the midst of her record-breaking global Eras Tour, and will release her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, later this month.

It is unclear whether Alwyn, who is also known for his work in projects like Mary Queen of Scots and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, is dating anyone at the moment. Following his appearance in Kinds of Kindness, he is set to star in The Brutalist and Hamlet, as well as the miniseries Brideshead Revisited, according to IMDb.
