'My job is to love her': Rory Feek says daughter's coming out challenged his faith

Rory Feek hasn’t been dealt an easy hand, but thanks to his faith, the musician has found the strength to carry on. However, that doesn’t mean his faith has not been tested.

Before he met his late wife and musical partner, Joey Feek, Rory Feek had two daughters from a previous marriage. He also has a 4-year-old daughter with Joey, Indiana, who was born with Down syndrome.

Just a few days after his lost his wife to cancer in March 2016, Feek sensed that his daughter needed to tell him something.

“I said, ‘Just tell me, Hopie,’ ” Feek says in an upcoming interview with CBS Sunday Morning. “And she went on to tell me that her friend Wendy was more than her friend, that Wendy and [she] had been dating for almost a year. And that she was in love.”

Feek admits that his daughter’s sexuality was difficult for him to accept because of his religion.

“And my first reaction, honestly, was I don’t know. Because my conservative Christian faith that saved me — the first reaction is that challenges that immensely.”

He continued, “Am I supposed to shun my child now and say, ‘No, you can’t be in my life until you come around to thinking like I’m thinking?'”

…it's been a wonderful Papa's day.

Ultimately, Feek realizes that his job, as a father, is to love his daughter and to accept her, no matter what.

“The only thing I try to keep in mind is it’s her life, it’s her choice, it’s her faith. And my job is to love her even when it’s hard.”

Hopie and Wendy are now engaged, and just purchased their first home in Alabama.

Feek’s interview with Sunday Morning will air on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET on CBS.
