Jennifer Lopez at the Met Gala: The Night’s Co-Host Shines in Schiaparelli Butterfly Gown

Jennifer Lopez, a co-chair of fashion’s biggest night, wore her most daring Met Gala ensemble yet at Monday’s gala, taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Arriving on the earlier end, as is expected for a co-chair of the night, Lopez stepped onto the carpet in a Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown designed by Daniel Roseberry.

The dress code for this year’s gala is “The Garden of Time.” The A-lister was mostly on theme with the look. The sheath dress, embroidered with warm silver pearls and rhinestones, features 2.5 million silver foil bugles. Lopez told Vogue on the red carpet that the look was meant to resemble butterfly wings.

To round out the look, the star wore a Tiffany & Co. necklace, earrings and bracelet, a ring in platinum and yellow gold with diamonds and a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany Bird on a Rock ring. She finished it off with a Tyler Ellis champagne clutch.

The multihyphenate served as a co-chair of this year’s gala alongside Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. Lopez’s official duties at fashion’s biggest night seem like a no-brainer, considering the star has attended 13 times prior to Monday’s event.

Vogue red carpet host La La Anthony reminded Lopez that Monday’s event was her 14th Met Gala, to which Lopez jokingly said: “I think I retire tonight. I think that’s it for me.”

Throughout the years, Lopez has worn a wide variety of designers in the past, including Ralph Lauren, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. Last year, Lopez wore an elegant Ralph Lauren ensemble that perfectly fit the Karl Lagerfeld theme.

It’s hard to deny that 2019’s look was the real standout across the 20-year span Lopez has attended the event. She delivered on the “Camp” theme in a glittering Versace ensemble. The extravagant silver dress would’ve turned heads on its own, but Lopez added a matching beaded wig to complete the ensemble.

This year’s dress code takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails nicely with the latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which opens to the public Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated show spotlights fragile pieces from the institute’s archives, all viewed through a lens of nature. The exhibit’s coffee table book will be released June 18.
