Jennifer Garner opens up about tabloid scrutiny during marriage to Ben Affleck

On CBS News Sunday Morning, Jennifer Garner opened up about being so publicly scrutinized by the tabloids during her decade-long relationship with Ben Affleck. The two married in 2005 and separated in 2015, with Garner officially filing for divorce last year. Garner said that for a solid decade during their marriage, it was commonplace for them to have five or six cars outside their house at all times during the week, and upwards of 15 or 20 cars on the weekends. “Looking back on that, I really feel the stress of it. I really -- I could cry talking about it,” Garner said. Upon reflection, Garner admitted that the scrutiny put on public relationships can create a pressure to make something happen, like get married, in hopes of putting an end to the constant questions. And while she didn’t go so far as to say that's what happened between her and Affleck, she did elaborate that public scrutiny can also move relationships in the reverse as well. “If there is an inkling of trouble, or the tabloids decide there is trouble, it can create trouble,” Garner said. Garner said that she no longer looks at the tabloids, but it wasn’t easy for her to get to that point. “I had to really get serious with myself and say, ‘this is not healthy. Nobody should see pictures of themselves that paparazzi has taken,’” Garner said. “You can in the morning, you can either be making breakfast for your kids, making their lunch boxes. Or you can be getting paparazzi ready. And so, you know, I know which way I'm gonna go.”

CBS Sunday Morning airs Sundays at 6:30 a.m. on CBS.
