Bill Clinton talks Sarah Sanders and #MeToo troubles

Bill Clinton visited The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, where he weighed in on Sarah Sanders being kicked out of a restaurant over politics. No. 42 supported the way the owner discreetly handled the situation.

“I also had a lot of respect for the way Sarah Huckabee Sanders handled it,” Clinton said. “She was very dignified. She didn’t chew them out. She didn’t pitch a fit. She didn’t call them immigrant-loving thugs, or whatever. She just got up and left and offered to pay.”

Clinton believes the Trump administration caused the partisan vitriol infesting our society, however. “A lot of poison has been poured down America’s throat since the 2016 campaign,” he said. ”It started by calling Mexicans rapists and murderers. … It’s hard to pour poison down other people’s throat and not have it bubble back up.”

While Clinton understands the sentiments behind the recent string of name calling, heckling, and refusal of service, he also believes, “Sooner or later people need to quit tearing each other down and start going to work.”

Clinton also owned up to his own mistakes, both while president and his recent fumbling of an opportunity to be more accountable for his actions with Monica Lewinsky. In light of the millions of victims of sexual assault and injustice, he admitted, “I need not to react to the raw pain of having to relive something that happened 20 years ago.”

Clinton ended the interview by saying, “We should think about this #MeToo moment. We can’t waste it. We’ve got to do better.”

The Daily Show With Trevor Noah airs weeknights at 11 on Comedy Central.
