Who Is Jennifer Aniston's BFF? Reese Witherspoon & Ellen DeGeneres Duke It Out

Part of what makes The Ellen DeGeneres Show so special is host Ellen DeGeneres’ willingness to speak to her guests as peers (which they are, given her own enormous following). In the case of guest Reese Witherspoon, however, DeGeneres may be a little too closely linked to the star’s social circle. When mutual friend Jennifer Aniston came up in conversation, Witherspoon found herself sparring with the storied comedian over who was “better friends” with Aniston — and DeGeneres wasted no time in calling up Aniston herself to set things straight.

Four months later, Witherspoon is back on DeGeneres’ show when the host reminds of their fight over Aniston’s BFF title — and then plays her the clip from that same episode to show the actress how Aniston responded on the phone. Check out the hilarious clip below!

The conversation between these two back in May started innocently enough: Witherspoon and DeGeneres were swapping stories about Aniston’s 50th birthday party, and the former casually mentioned that she and Aniston “always have the best time together.” DeGeneres wasted no time in jumping on that one: “Do you think you and I have a better time together than you and Jen?” the host quickly shot back. Witherspoon laid out her case: she and Jen “know each other better because [they’re] really, really good friends and [they] just finished [their] television show that we have coming out together, it’s called the Morning Show.” The talk show host quipped in return: “Yeah, she told me she needed a break, she was glad it was over.”

That’s when DeGeneres made the phone call shown above, where Aniston seems to confirm that she and DeGeneres are closer friends, based on “almost 30 years of knowing each other.” However, DeGeneres has clearly employed some careful editing there too — if only because Witherspoon’s bragging about her friendship with Oprah was really starting to get to her.

In the end, it’s sweet to see celebrities squabble like teenagers over their friendships — if only because it means that Aniston is a friend worth fighting over in front of a live studio audience.
