Jeannie Mai Says Cassie’s 'Voice Has Been a Shield and Sanctuary' for Her After Accusing Ex Jeezy of Domestic Abuse

Mai alleged that her estranged husband abused her several times in an April divorce filing obtained by PEOPLE

Jeannie Mai is applauding Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura for her honesty.

On May 23, Ventura, 37, spoke out for the first time after the release of a video from 2016 showing her getting physically abused by her ex, Sean “Diddy” Combs. In a statement on Instagram, the singer thanked her “family, friends, strangers and those I have yet to meet” for their “love and support,” and Mai, 45, was one of many stars who weighed in on her statement in the comments.

Mai wrote that Cassie’s “voice has been a shield and sanctuary for many, including me,” reflecting her own accusations of domestic abuse, which she recently alleged against her estranged husband Jeezy.

“In every echo of your bravery, Cassie, there lies a melody of hope that dances through the silence,” Mai, 45, wrote. “Thank you for turning your fight into your light 🌟.”

In an April court filing obtained by PEOPLE, Mai alleged several instances of domestic abuse and child neglect during her relationship with Jeezy, 46, who she claimed had “explosive outbursts, excessive drinking and domestic violence."

In response, the rapper (born Jay Wayne Jenkins) shared a statement on Instagram denying the allegations, calling them “not only false, but also deeply disturbing, especially coming from someone I loved.”

“This malicious attempt to tarnish my character and disrupt my family is ridiculous,” he wrote. “It's disheartening to witness the manipulation and deceit at play and at this time my main concern is being an active father to our daughter as I continue to fight for court mandated joint custody. Rest assured, the truth will prevail through the proper legal channels.”

The pair were married in 2021 and Jeezy filed for divorce in September 2023, calling their marriage “irretrievably broken” with “no hope for reconciliation.” In his filing, which was obtained by PEOPLE, he said he and Mai were “currently living in a bona fide state of separation.”

The former couple share a daughter, 2-year-old Monaco, over whom they continue to battle for custody rights. In April, Jeezy requested joint physical and legal custody of her, as he alleged that he hasn’t had “any significant parenting” with Monaco “all year.”

Days later, Mai told PEOPLE she was "doing good" as she spoke about life as a single mom.

"I've just been managing it. I take every single issue, whether it's my career or it's my parenting skills or my personal time, I take it as I need and I give it my full attention when I'm in it," she said.

"I'm so thankful that I get to focus on the things that matter more than anything else in the world. That's Monaco and Jeannie. Those are the only two things that matter to me right now," she continued. "So whatever it takes to make sure we are healthy, happy and safe, I'm going to do whatever it takes."
