Jason Ritter’s 'Confusing' Proposal to Melanie Lynskey Is So Funny It’s Almost Movie-Worthy

While celebrity weddings often get covered by the media, with perhaps even full spreads in Vogue, celebrity proposals are mostly kept private. So, of course, we always love to hear stories of celebrities getting down on one knee and saying “Yes!”
Most recently, Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey opened up about how her husband Jason Ritter popped the question back in 2016. “My husband’s first proposal was so confusing I didn’t know what was happening,” Lynskey said in a recent appearance at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “The day before I had been looking at rings and I tried one on and I was like ‘Oh, kind of looks like an engagement ring almost, I don’t think I’m going to get it.'”

A day later, Lynskey said Ritter delivered a “strange speech” and gave her the ring. By that point, Lynskey had no idea that meant they were engaged. “It didn’t cross my mind,” she said.
“We were just sort of sitting there, he had paused whatever, The Bachelor, and I was just sort of like, ‘Oh, okay.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not breaking up?’ He was like, ‘No, No, No!’ So I said, ‘Okay,’ and then I was like, ‘Well, thank you … lovely, good chat!'” Lynskey, who has been married to Ritter since 2020, remembered.
“Then three days later, we went to meet his family for Christmas and he said, ‘We’re engaged!’ I said, ‘Are we?'” she said. Comedy-movie-worthy, we know!
“It was so confusing,” she said. “I was like, ‘Do I tell my friends?’ And he said, ‘Of course!'”
Lynskey then explained to the Gen V star what a proposal should look like. “People usually understand that it’s happening,” she told Ritter.
Since then, however, the pair started a sweet tradition. “He’s been very cute and he’s been proposing to me over and over, which is very sweet,” Lynskey gushed to Fallon.
Most recently, Ritter proposed on her birthday while in Slovakia with their 5-year-old daughter. “He gave me all these little gifts and was going to take me out for dinner and do it at dinner but our daughter was like, ‘Give her the ring, dad! Where’s the ring? That’s the big present!’ ” she added.
So while the first proposal was less than picture-perfect, it seems the two have made quite a sweet tradition out of it. If a “confusing” proposal means such a sweet, longstanding marriage, sign us up!
