James Corden delivers emotional plea for gun-control legislation

On The Late Late Show, host James Corden called out U.S. officials in the wake of yet another deadly mass shooting. Wednesday night, 12 people were killed by a gunman at a bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The shooting occurred about 30 miles from where the show is produced.

A frustrated Corden asked, “What can we say that hasn’t been said? How do we continue to beg the leaders of this country to change this culture when they clearly won’t?”

Officials’ failure to pass meaningful gun-control legislation is a significant part of the problem, he said. “When votes and financing and tradition seem to matter more than people’s lives, how do we stop this from becoming the norm?”

As a result of the midterm elections, Democrats have taken control of the House. And since Democrats are more supportive of gun-control legislation, Corden said, “I cling to the hope that the new members of Congress will step up [where] the predecessors let us down.”

Corden ended his statement by honoring the innocent victims of the latest mass shooting and requesting that “everyone in this room, for you, everyone watching at home to take a minute of silence to remember those who were lost last night.”
