Today, J. Cole officially “surprise-released” his new 12-track project, Might Delete Later, in which he responds to the beef sparked by Kendrick Lamar on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” Of his several swings at Lamar, one jab on track eight, “Pi” feat. Daylyt and Ab-Soul, stands out in particular for being… well… vile.

They plead the fifth, I’m seeing hints of a trans fella
In cancel culture’s vicinity, he’s no killer, trust me
Beneath his chosen identity, there is still a pussy, period

Yeesh. And by yeesh, I mean, yikes. And by yikes, I mean, man, J. Cole is really out here dropping poorly thought-out, transphobic bars. Beyond using transness as an insult and sneaking in a bit of misogyny to boot, the implication that trans men are still woman is, by definition, transphobic.

A generous reading is that the bar about the “trans fella” is an overwritten attempt to call the subject of his ire a coward gone wrong, that he was more concerned with coming across as clever and badass than he was about making any grand statements on gender identity. Even with such grace granted, it illustrates how Cole approaches LGBTQ+ subject matters — and unfortunately, it’s not the first instance.

In 2013, on the song “Villuminati” from his album Born Sinner, Cole rapped, “I don’t mean no disrespect whenever I say f*****/ Okay, f*****?/ Don’t be so sensitive/ If you want to get fucked in the ass, that’s between you and whoever else’s dick it is,” following it up with the ‘punchline,’ “Pause, maybe that line was too far/ Just a little joke to show how homophobic you are/ And who can blame ya.” More recently, on “9 5 . s o u t h” from 2021’s The Off-Season, he dropped this turd of a line: “Check your genitalia, pussy n****s bleedin’ on yourself.” Guess the ‘trans + menstruation’ well was so rich Cole just had to return to it.

All of which is to say, it’s 2024, and in 11 years of rapping, Cole still hasn’t learned that maybe he shouldn’t use the LGBTQ+ community as a punchline.

But wait, Cole stans might fire back, Kendrick has his own weird history of trans tracks. And, sure, it’s true that “Auntie Diaries” felt dated upon arrival (and repeating the f-slur as a refrain was… a choice), but the track at least had an underlying theme of acceptance and empathy. More than that, the song was a love letter to a trans family member. “Pi,” on the other hand, uses trans identity as an insult and a joke. See the difference?

At the end of the day, it’s simply a shame such a mainstream rapper — a rapper who’s not only a festival headliner, but who has his own damn festival — would stoop so low.
