Ivanka and Melania Trump's Women's History Month tweets are not going over well

It’s tough to top the Twitter turmoil created by President Trump, last seen using his 280 characters to lash out at actor Alec Baldwin, whom he called “Alex” in a typo-ridden tweet. And yet both Melania and Ivanka Trump are getting significant backlash over their own social media activity.

Both women commemorated Women’s History Month, which began March 1, with tweets praising the strength and accomplishments of American women.

The messages may seem innocuous and well-intentioned enough, but both have been flooded with angry responses from critics who say the Trumps are acting hypocritically. Some of the accusations leveled at the first lady and her stepdaughter include a lack of willingness to stand up to POTUS, particularly in light of his sexual misconduct allegations and recent remark that claiming to be a feminist would be “going too far.”

While many accused Melania Trump of not doing enough to support women, a few followers worried that her tweet signaled a sudden feminist streak.

Ivanka Trump didn’t fare much better, particularly given her recent statement that she believed her father over the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct. Others accused her of being “complicit” and of reneging on her promises to use her White House role to empower women.

While many have defended the Trump women in the comments, it’s hard to ignore the “Kremlin Barbie” insults. But will the backlash spur the most influential women in Trump’s life — who also faced criticism over their Black History Month tweets in February — to take a stronger stance in their support of women?
