Sacha Baron Cohen can’t seem to catch a break lately amid misconduct allegations revealed by Rebel Wilson and, now, an announcement that he has split from wife Isla Fisher. But, despite the timing, the two things are seemingly not linked.

Fisher and Baron Cohen’s joint statements announcing their breakup, which were shared to their Instagram stories on April 5, suggest their split happened long before Wilson and the Borat actor’s most recent back and forth.

“After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down. In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage,” they said in statements shared on alongside a photo of them.

“We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change,” they added. “We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy.”

A source who spoke to Us Weekly also stated that the couple ended their marriage before Wilson’s book release, saying: “They have been living separate lives since last year but wanted to give this space and time for their children to be OK with this before the news came out and they got all this attention.” The source added: “They are notoriously very private people and wanted to focus on their family.”

The announcement comes weeks after Wilson, 44, wrote about her experience working with Baron Cohen, 52, on the 2016 movie The Brothers Grimsby, which also starred Fisher, 48, in her memoir Rebel Rising.

Wilson, who previously worked with Fisher on 2012’s Bachelorette, claimed that Baron Cohen, who wrote and produced the movie, repeatedly tried to pressure her into filming nude scenes, which she refused to do. And, in one instance, pressured her to do a lewd act on camera. Wilson wrote: “SBC summons me via a production assistant saying that I’m needed to film an additional scene. ‘Okay, well, we’re gonna film this extra scene,’ SBC says. Then he pulls his pants down … SBC says very matter-of-factly: ‘Okay, now I want you to stick your finger up my ass.’ And I’m like, ‘What?? … No!!’ …”

Wilson continued in her book, “I was now scared. I wanted to get out of there, so I finally compromised: I slapped him on the ass and improvised a few lines as the character.”

Baron Cohen denied the allegations via a statement shared by his rep: “While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of The Brothers Grimsby.”

Baron Cohen and Fisher met in 2001 and married in 2010. They share daughters Olive, 16, and Elula, 12, along with son Montgomery, 9.
