Ice Cube, Jamey Johnson added to Ohio State Fair's concert lineup

Rapper-actor Ice Cube, who has appeared in more than 40 films, and country singer Jamey Johnson, who co-wrote the Trace Adkins' hit "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," are the final acts added to the concert lineup at the Ohio State Fair.

Ice Cube, who performed at the fair in 2022, is to return at 7 p.m. July 30, with tickets costing $52 and $62. Johnson, along with special guest Southhall, appear at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 and ticket prices are $38 and $48. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com/OhioStateFair.

Those who sign up to receive the Ohio State Fair e-newsletter can get access to the Ohio State Fair presale starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday and ending at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson) is known for his early contributions to gangsta rap's popularity, which include his brief stint as lead rapper with the controversial group N.W.A., featuring Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. A monetary dispute led to his leaving the trio in 1989 and launching a successful solo career.

The rapper turned to acting in 1991, making his debut as Doughboy in John Singleton's influential "Boyz N the Hood." Since then, the 54-year-old has appeared in such movies as the "Friday" and "Barbershop" franchises, the family comedies "Are We There Yet?" and "Are We Done Yet?" and the critically acclaimed black comedy war film "Three Kings" with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. He also has co-written, directed and produced numerous other films.

Ice Cube was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A in 2016 and his oldest son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., portrayed him in the 2015 biopic "Straight Outta Compton."

Country singer-songwriter Johnson left college and the marching band at Jacksonville State University after two years and began playing bars in the Montgomery, Alabama, area while serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. By 2000, he had relocated to Nashville to pursue music full-time.

In addition to his own releases, which include such singles as "The Dollar," which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot Country chart, and "In Color," which peaked at No. 9, 48-year-old Johnson has co-written hits for other artists. Among them are "Give It Away," George Strait's 51st No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and two more songs for Adkins, including the No. 1 hit, "Ladies Love Country Boys."

Previously announced concerts at the Ohio State Fair are Kidz Bop at 6:30 p.m. July 24 (tickets $32); Alabama at 7 p.m. July 25 (tickets $65 and $75); Stone Temple Pilots at 7:30 p.m. July 26 (tickets $37 and $47); Boyz II Men at 7 p.m. July 27 (tickets $38 and $48); La Zenda Nortena at 7:30 p.m. July 28 (tickets $20); Lauren Daigle at 7 p.m. July 29 (tickets $58 and $68); Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias at 7 p.m. July 31 (tickets $55 and $65); Stephen Sanchez at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 (tickets $50 and $40); Ohio Players and Midnight Star at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 (tickets cost $23 and $33).

The fair also is to offer free concerts that are included in fair admission. The All-Ohio State Fair Band & Youth Choir is to perform at 1 p.m. July 28, and Hotel California, an Eagles tribute, is slated for 1 p.m. July 30.

All concerts take place in the indoor, air-conditioned WCOL Celeste Center. The Ohio State Fair runs July 24 through Aug. 4. For more information, visit ohiostatefair.com.
