Hot Toys Next Trip Into Star Wars' Expanded Universe History Is Even Wilder
Last week Hot Toys surprised Star Wars fans with a two-for-one reveal that the toymaker would start to dip into the world of Star Wars “Legends”—the contemporary name for the galaxy far, far away’s former canon in the Expanded Universe. Now, it’s somehow topping that surprise even further, with this: Dark Empire merchandise in the year of our lord, 2024.
Today Hot Toys revealed that its next Luke Skywalker figure pulls from the iconic cover artwork of the legendary Dark Empire comic series by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy—depicting Luke as he grapples with the pull of the Dark Side, having come face to face with the returned clone of Emperor Palpatine. The figure depicts Luke in striking black robes—a blend of his Return of the Jedi gear and the padded armor of Darth Vader—and includes multiple hands for posing and, of course, both his trusty green lightsaber as well as Vader’s. An “Artisan” edition of the figure will give Luke rooted hair instead of sculpted locks, while certain special edition releases of the figure, much like the Darth Revan and Lord Starkiller figures revealed last week, will come with a commemorative coin.
Because honestly, getting high-end Expanded Universe merchandise in the here and now is worth commemorating! For so long, Star Wars merch put the old EU material aside to focus on the current canon, but it’s nice to see that it can play with both versions of the galaxy far, far away, and celebrate them in the ways Star Wars loves celebrating most: letting us buy figures.
The Dark Empire Luke Skywalker figure doesn’t have a release window quite yet, but knowing Hot Toys, you’ll probably be waiting a while to get your hands on it. Click through for a few more pictures!
