Here's What Ms. Marvel's Episode 3 Origin Twist Means for Kamala and the MCU
Ms Marvel spoilers follow.
If you've been barking up the Inhuman tree for a while now you're not the only one.
Is seemed the Ms Marvel creators had been doing their best to hint that Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) – much like her comic-book counterpart – could have been a Kree descendant.
Alas we were wrong. Tricked. Bamboozled. Kamala is not the Inhuman we thought she was, or at least not the type of Inhuman we presumed.
She does not have the blue blood running through her veins that would make her a Kree descendant but is in fact ClanDestine (often referred to as Djinn).
This cracker of an episode three reveal may have left you scratching your head. It is, after all, the MCU's first mention of ClanDestines (or the Djinn) and little is known of their origin within the cinematic universe.
So who exactly are they and how do they fit into the MCU?
Who are the ClanDestine?
Their story is pretty long-winded but in a nutshell the ClanDestine began with a man called Adam.
In 1168 CE he had a vision of a mysterious woman who gave him powers including immortality and invulnerability. This woman turned out to be a Djinn called Elayth.
Elayth had been trapped inside a gem by a wizard. Adam was able to free Elayth and the two fell in love and had children. Those descendants inherited Elayth's powers in different ways, becoming ClanDestine. Kamala, alongside her great-grandmother Aisha (Mehwish Hayat) are among those descendants.
Not all descendants appear to inherit these gifts as Kamala's brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh) does not have any powers nor does her mother Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff) or grandmother.
In the latest episode when Kamala's father Yusuf (Mohan Kapoor) is talking to Bruno (Matt Lintz) about the Djinn they are talked about as "supernatural beings of pre-historic folklore."
In the real world the Djinn derive from Islamic Mythology. Much like the MCU Asgardians get their inspiration from Norse mythology, the introduction of the Djinn could be Marvel's way of connecting Kamala's powerful lineage to her religion and culture to build a more well-rounded and quite frankly, interesting backstory.
What does this mean for the MCU?
While this latest origin twist offers the opportunity for a rich and intriguing narrative to be told it does mean that, once again, the Inhumans will not be getting their wider story told just yet.
Already some fans aren't too happy about this – cue Twitter response in three, two, one:

However if you're still hoping for a Kree connection, don't give up just yet. During Kamala's talk with Najma (Nimra Bucha) – before she wilded out and turned on her – Najma revealed something interesting about her powers.
She told Kamala that she and the other ClanDestine were able to find Kamala because they sensed the presence of Noor when she put on the bangle. The same bangle which unlocked Kamala's powers.
During that conversation Najma revealed that she and her group are from the Noor dimension and that there is Noor within them. Meaning that there is Noor within her as Aisha.
Interestingly the flashback scene in the beginning also revealed something telling.
When the bangle was first retrieved by their group in India in 1942 it was removed from a severed hand. The corpse they pried the bangle off of was blue.
As we know that is the same complexion of the Kree aliens, which implies that the bangle either belonged to or was stolen by the Kree.
Moments later Aisha wore the bangle and got a vision, which we viewers were not privy to, though it's interesting that this Kree bangle or bangle associated with the Kree not only gave Aisha's the vision but is also able to get them home.
Not much is known about the Noor dimension or if it has any connection to the Kree.
The only thing that we can be certain of is that Ms Marvel creator Bisha K Ali is not afraid of tearing up the comic rulebook.
While this may not be identical to the Kamala origin story we're familiar with from the comic book page we wouldn't rule out an Inhuman link just yet.
